EMCUK 2021 - Virtual Event

For 2021, we are hosting a unique virtual event, which is designed to augment the next 'real' event which will be held in May 2022.

We have invited several guest speakers to speak about the following:-

The exclusive presentations will be available to be viewed from 9.00 am GMT on the 19th May and will remain on the site until the 30th June.

Antennas, and Real-Time Spectrum Analyser Measurements

Session description

Whether you are doing EMC or antenna measurements, it is important to have an understanding of the different parameters which need to be taken into account. From an EMC point of view, the calibration of the antennas used in the testing is key, including the incorporation of that data into the results, and being aware of any impact it might have on the overall measurement and uncertainty.

In terms of mobile communications, there are a wide range of antenna types which can be used, and with the advent of 5G and other communication technologies, antenna design and development has progressed significantly. For all measurements, the analyser/ receiver is a key item of equipment, and the range and types of available analyser have increased over recent years.
With the advent of new measuring techniques (such as FFT), it is important that users understand how to use these to gain the maximum benefit.

Session description

The modelling of electromagnetic systems has become both feasible and affordable in the last twenty years. This has been enabled by the availability of powerful but affordable computing in addition to a number of software systems which enable not only the solution of the physics of the interaction of electromagnetic fields with the geometry of concern but also the modelling of that geometry.

There are still a number of challenges in the use and acceptance of the modelling of electromagnetic interactions, including validation, visualisation and assimilation of results and the modelling of diffusive materials and non-linearities.

Brexit, CE and UKCA Marking

This 90-minute workshop is presented by Dai Davis, on the most likely consequences of Brexit and the effect on the CE Marking regime, and how to prepare easily for both a “hard” and “soft” Brexit,

Obligations under CE Marking Directives are placed on the manufacturer, the importer, and also on the users of equipment within their scopes, including all electronic and mechanical devices, as well as safety equipment.

How will Brexit change those obligations?

What should businesses such as theatres who use equipment bearing the CE Marking do now, to minimise disruption following Brexit?

RED (the Radio Equipment Directive)

Session description

The RED replaced the old R&TTE Directive in 2016, making sweeping changes that impact most product manufacturers who provide radio enabled equipment.

In fact, in a few years, due to the Internet of Things (IoT) it will probably be quite a rare product that declares compliance with the EMCD or LVD. The RED will cover almost everything.

All products that have a radio function, transmitter or receiver, come within scope of the RED and are required to demonstrate compliance with EMC, safety and radio performance requirements. Even if the main function of the product is not a radio feature, or if CE Marked radio modules are used by the end product manufacturer; the RED still applies to the final product.

The RED has extended the definition of ‘radio function’ to cover equipment that uses wireless propagation for radio communication or determination, at any frequency up to 3,000 GHz.
This includes everything; such as low power short range communication, GPS receivers, radio and TV receivers, cellular communication modules, ground-penetrating radar, and many forms of wireless power transfer, etc.

There are technical and administrative requirements for meeting the RED which will be addressed in this session by Michael and Charlie.

Transport, Systems and Installations

Session description

The session is less about the equipment design and more about the systems design, development and qualification from the prime contractor’s point of view.

Transport products of land, sea and air have their own challenges of mobility, safety considerations and mass/volume restrictions. Increasingly, transport platforms operate in an integrated manner with systems which often extend over a wide area and have similar safety concerns and reliability requirements as the platforms they support.

Many prime contractors or designers and developers of complex systems do not design and develop the equipment which they integrate into the final system. As such they have to develop specifications which control all the electromagnetic effects with which the equipment has to cope. These include the traditional EMC susceptibility and emission requirements. In addition, there are a growing number of other electromagnetic effects, including electrostatic charging, induced effects of Lightning, intentional electromagnetic interference etc. Prime contractor organisations also have a responsibility to ensure that systems architecture and installation is designed to ensure that equipment qualification limits are not exceeded.

This session provides an opportunity for speakers to present their approaches to the development of such specifications and systems design.

Session description

There are many areas of Electromagnetic Hazards which involve extremely high fields, currents and voltages. Designing and testing against such hazards requires many special considerations, particularly in circumstances of commercial cost constraints. Traditional EMC testing techniques are often inappropriate.

There are international standards being developed which require to be reviewed and monitored.

There are safety concerns to be accounted for in terms of radiation hazards and/or shock hazards.

Whilst the organizers had hoped to have had the planned in-person symposium in the beautiful city of Glasgow, Scotland they are instead focussing on delivering an outstanding virtual event - with a Scottish flavour.

The symposium will provide state-of-the-art education on EMC, Signal Integrity and Power Integrity design and measurement techniques.
